Does YNAB have an MCP server?
Short answer: YNAB has an official API, and the MCP servers you can find for it are built by other people. This page says what each one gives you, and what still has to come from somewhere else.
At a glance
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Official API | Yes. REST over HTTPS, with a personal access token |
| Official MCP server | No |
| Community MCP servers | Yes, and you host them yourself |
| Covers subscriptions | Only as far as your budget rows describe them |
| Needs bank access | Yes, for YNAB itself |
What the YNAB API gives an assistant
You make a token in YNAB under Developer Settings and paste it into the tool you are using. The API then serves your budgets, your accounts and your transactions.
That is plenty for questions about money in and money out. It is thinner for questions about paid tools, because a budget row is a payment, not a subscription. A yearly plan shows up once and then goes quiet for eleven months.
Why the community MCP servers need care
A community server sits between your assistant and the YNAB API. You run it, you keep it updated, and you hand it your token. Nothing about it is checked by YNAB.
That is fine for a hobby setup on your own machine. It is a poor fit if the answers feed a team, or if you would rather not copy a long-lived token into a tool you found last week.
What LemSubs does instead
LemSubs holds the list of what you pay for, what it costs and when it renews. It runs a hosted MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor can read that list after you sign in once.
There is no bank login anywhere in it. You add subscriptions yourself, bring a CSV, or read a bank statement file on your own device. Your assistant gets the tidy list, not your bank.
- Reads and writes are separate, and writes start switched off.
- One key per assistant, so you can remove one without breaking the rest.
- Every call an assistant makes is written to your audit log.

| YNAB | Yes for the API. YNAB runs its own REST API, but not its own MCP server. You make a personal access token in YNAB, under Developer Settings, and the API then serves your budgets, accounts and transactions over HTTPS. YNAB also lets other apps ask for access on your behalf. The MCP servers you see for YNAB are built by other people and wrap that same API, so you host them yourself. | 2026-09-20 | https://api.ynab.com/ |
Questions people ask
Does YNAB run an official MCP server?
No. YNAB publishes a REST API with personal access tokens. The MCP servers you find for YNAB are built by other people and wrap that API, so you run them yourself.
Can an assistant see my YNAB subscriptions?
Only what your budget shows. A budget row is a payment, so yearly plans and free trials are easy to miss. A subscription list keeps the renewal date and the plan, not just the charge.
Do I need a bank login to use LemSubs with an assistant?
No. You add subscriptions yourself, import a CSV, or read a bank statement file on your own device. LemSubs never asks for bank credentials.
